A nebula in our Own Galaxy – The Red Rectangle!

Red Rectangle (Credit: NASA)

One of the most unusual nebulae of our Milky Way – HD 44179, commonly known as the Red Rectangle is basically a ladder-like structure surrounding a dying sun-like star. This star is now at the end of its lifetime, and is ejecting its outer layers to produce this reddish beautiful nebula. The surrounding dust particles reflect the starlight from the central star. There are molecules mixed with the dust which emit light in red. This nebula is basically an X-shaped structure with its ladders suspected to be arising from the outflows of gas and dust from the star in the center.
