Mystic Mountains!!

The Mystic Mountains in Carina Nebula (Credit: NASA/ESA)

These Mystic Mountains which I would have expected to originate only in the dramatic imagination of some very powerful and colorful dreamer is actually not a fantasy art piece but a real Stellar Nursery in the Cosmic Space. These are three pillars of gas and dust in the Carina Nebulae located almost 7500 light years away from us. Within the three pillars resides a complete factory for star formation where chaotic and violent activities have been going on and infant stars are being born. The powerful jets being fired by these superhot new-born stars inside and the brilliant radiation from nearby bright stars are eating away these pillars, the most vulnerable to this attack being the cool hydrogen residing at the top of the three pillars – a perfect example of ‘erosion by radiation‘.

In this image, clicked by the Hubble’s Wide Field Camera the blue regions are full of Oxygen, the red part is being dominated by sulphur while the green places host mainly hydrogen and nitrogen.
