The Exclamation Mark !

Arp 302 (Credit: NASA)

This pair of spiral galaxies – one seen face on and another edge on, giving it a shape of an Exclamation Mark – are known collectively as UGC 9618 or Arp 302. Both of the spirals are extremely gas rich and hence have loads of fuel for star formation. The young massive stars radiating mainly in infrared accounts for the galaxy pair’s enormous radiation at this wavelength range. The two spirals as seen here are in their early stage of interaction and are expected to merge after few millions of years.
