The Cosmic Tadpole…

Tadpole Galaxy (Credit: NASA)

Arp 188 aka the Tadpole Galxy is a spiral galaxy which is disrupted by some compact intruder galaxy that crossed it long ago and resulted in this long tail. This cosmic tadpole is almost 400 million light years from Earth. The tail is almost 280 thousand light-years long (which is quite big – light from one end of the tail to reach the other end takes 2,80,000 years) and comprises of big bright blue star clusters. As the galaxy grows older, it is likely to loose it’s tail and the star clusters residing in the tail presently, are expected to form individual small satellites of Arp 188.
